It doesn’t take much looking around for us to come to the conclusion: the world is leading us in many different directions. Most of these directions are not towards God. Worse than that for GLBT communities, the world seems to tell us that you cannot be both gay and Christian.  To put it a different way, much of the world seems convinced you have to be straight to be a Christian.   It simply isn’t true.

Being a Christian requires only this: that God has revealed to you that Jesus is your savior.  Once you have accepted this, your heart changes, and your heart’s desire is to follow Jesus.  This does not mean giving up your sexual orientation. Truth be known, it may mean that your values change, and that the things that used to hold you captive no longer do.  But by the grace of God in Christ Jesus, you will not feel as if you have given these things up.  You simply won’t want them to be part of your life anymore.  Your life in Christ will be new, different, fresh, exciting, and filled with purpose!

The closet is a scary place to be.  It is a self-destructive place.  There, you always fear someone finding out who you really are, and then rejecting you for simply being yourself.   Coming out of that closet means accepting yourself, and accepting God’s unconditional and never-ending love.   Nothing can ever separate you from that love.  Knowing that, your closet door’s lock is broken, and you need never return.  Whether that closet once held you in fear of your sexual orientation, or something else, Christ sets you free from that and calls you to come out to live an abundant life.

If you are already out of the closet about your orientation, you may still need to come out as a Christian!!! Doing so will improve your quality of life.  It may also help someone else to find Jesus.  Who knows the strength of your own life in influencing someone else for good?  Most of us would not be where we are today if it were not for the pioneers who led the way for us.  Today may be the day you come out to lead the way for someone who is looking to you to see what you will do.

Come Out for Jesus
