Today’s Scripture Reading: While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room in the hostel. Luke 2:6-7 (The Message Bible)
Like my Dad, I have a dry sense of humor. Maybe it’s environment that caused it, maybe it’s in the genes. I don’t know. Today’s reading says that Jesus was born in a manger because there was no room for them in the hostel. So, Jesus was born outside of a hostel environment. (Or was that hostile environment?) The world really was hostile--even from the ruler who was threatened enough to conspire to kill the new baby Savior. Not even the innkeeper had room for the new family. Easy enough to understand when it comes to the innkeeper--there was a census going on that required all of the people who were to report to Bethlehem to flood their way into town without a place to stay. As you look at your own Christmas preparations, do you have room for Jesus? Are you willing to open up your hearth and heart to welcome someone who will rock your world? Many of us would say, “No” because we want things nice, warm, cozy and comfortable for the holiday. So, are you a welcoming host in your own home’s hostel, or are you the one making this world a hostile environment for Jesus to be born? Come, Lord Jesus, and make my heart your home. Amen! |
